Born in Chicago. Ships everywhere.
One shop.
Tree to home.
Purpose Wood Co. is a Chicago wood brand that sells traced live edge and reclaimed hardwood slabs, handmade boards, custom furniture, and built-ins. Born in Chicago, it ships nationwide, traces every piece to its source, and gives a share of what it earns back to causes it believes in.
The arc
Follow one piece of wood, all the way home.
A sawmill sells you stock. A maker sells you an object. A millwork shop sells you a built-in. We do all of it, because they are the same story told in four chapters. Here is how a board becomes a building.
- Step 01SLAB
Urban salvaged, kiln dried, ready to work. Buy it raw or milled to spec.
Lumber→ - Step 02BOARD
The same wood becomes something you use every day. Made in small drops.
Goods→ - Step 03TABLE
A slab you pick becomes a custom table built to live in your space for decades.
Furniture→ - Step 04BUILT-IN
At full scale it becomes part of the house. Built-ins, shelving, a lasting island.

The Purpose Wood standard
We know where our wood comes from. So will you.
Most of our wood is salvaged from Chicago itself. Trees that came down in a storm, made way for a build, or reached the end of their life on a parkway. We track each piece. Species, where in the city it came from, why it came down, and how long it dried. No mystery lumber. No vague claims.
This is not a certification or a badge we bought. It is a practice we keep. We would rather show you the record than ask you to trust a logo.

What people say
Trusted at every scale of wood.
From a single slab shipped across the country to a wall of built-ins in a Chicago home.
“The slab arrived exactly as described, down to the moisture reading. First time I have bought wood online and felt zero surprise.”
“Our board came with a card telling us which Chicago street the tree came down on. We will never give a generic gift again.”
“They told us the built-in range up front, hit it to the dollar, and the work is unreal. No games, no surprises.”

This walnut came down on Wabansia Ave
A black walnut on Wabansia Ave in Bucktown, Chicago split in a spring 2024 storm. Purpose Wood Co. salvaged it, kiln dried it to 7 percent, and milled it into slab lot PW-0421 and the June WALNUT drop. Same tree, tracked the whole way.
What is urban salvaged wood?
Urban salvaged wood is lumber milled from trees removed in a city or suburb rather than logged from a forest. Reasons include storm damage, disease such as emerald ash borer, construction, and end of life. Salvaging keeps usable hardwood out of landfills and wood chippers.
